Characterisation and Mapping of Tailings: The New Potential Resources
Project Number: P1290
Status: Open to sponsors
Amira Program Manager: Rowena Duckworth
The project will employ advanced technologies (integrated optical and SEM microscopy) along with widely available laboratory techniques and tested exploration methods to obtain quantitative (size and abundance) detail of the different components in the tailings dam, thus recharacterising the tailings dam as a new economic resource.
The project will undertake a case study for a tailings dam (from a commodity such as coking coal, iron ore, or gold).
The project team will sample, plot and map the body, identify potential products of significant value in addition to improving dewatering strategies and dam volume reduction.
The project will target and analyse a range of samples selected from a range of cored depths from one tailings dam, as a case study, producing a ‘resource map’ and economic evaluation of its value.
