Program Overview

P1364 Minerals That Matter (Hydrothermal Cu) is an applied research program designed to accelerate discovery and delineation of hydrothermal Cu (+/- Au, U, Co) deposits. The project uses rapidly-collected, SEM-calibrated alteration mineral assemblage data from LIBS, along with advanced visualisation tools and statistical methods, to assess prospectivity and vector toward mineralisation across multiple scales.

The approach is grounded in more than a decade of successful CSIRO projects across major Australian Cu and Au systems, including Carrapateena, Ernest Henry, Eloise, North Portia, and Kalkaroo, and is based on the principle that hydrothermal copper systems—despite genetic differences—develop metasomatic halos and mappable mineral assemblage gradients that can be used to guide exploration targeting. The program has broad applicability across IOCG–ISCG, sediment-hosted stratiform Cu, and porphyry Cu–Au–Mo systems and is actively seeking collaboratively-inclined industry partners to further develop the workflow and strengthen/diversify the underlying knowledge and associated databases (models, libraries).
