Creating opportunities in South America

23 March, 2022 by zeme capa

In today’s post, Amira Global CEO Dr Jacqui Coombes discusses why LATAM is an important focus area for the organisation.

“Opportunity is knocking in South America.

Over recent months, Amira has been building a global network of allied organisations to help deliver new data, information, technology and innovation to our Members.

In South America, this includes a Memorandum of Understanding with the Innovation Hub of Peru, which offers a new avenue for connection within the country’s mining ecosystem.

We will also be announcing new agreements with two Chilean organisations in the coming days.

Our Head of Global Alliances and Manager LATAM, Patricio Pastorelli, is based in Santiago and can help Members connect with contacts in the region.

For Members, the Global Alliance can:

  • facilitate technology transfer
  • develop and strengthen pathways for scaling and commercialization of research and development outcomes through mining districts
  • develop standards for new technology adoption
  • develop global network of testing facilities to speed up scale up of new innovations
  • provide knowledge about LATAM market and key connections.

Why LATAM?

Amira’s role in the international mining community is to deliver transformational research and development, and innovation that will benefit our Members.

To this, we are addressing the challenges faced by industry: tailings management, water and energy use, and decarbonisation.

Tailings management is considered a mega challenge; that is, a problem that cannot be solved by one individual or organisation. It requires a holistic, concentrated, and global approach.

The cost of tailings is high, both to industry and society.

Globally, the mining industry is estimated to produce over 11.6 billion tonnes of tailings per year with 90 percent of this volume being permanently stored in tailings dams.

The lifetime cost to build, operate, maintain and close a tailings dam is estimated at over $680 million USD.

Moreover, catastrophic failure of dams is occurring at a rate of 2.2 failures per year, sadly resulting in loss of life and environmental damage, and the cost to society is estimated at up to $2.9bn USD per failure event.

One of the largest concentrations of tailings is in the Americas.

For our Members, research and innovation into tailings management is of critical importance.

It’s not only tailings!

Our focus in South America is not solely on tailings management.

The South American Exploration Initiative (SAXI) is an exciting project that is preparing to go into its second phase.

SAXI is investigating the exploration potential of the Guiana Shield and neighbouring terranes, which span Brazil, French Guiana, Suriname, Guyana and Venezuela, extending down to the Borborema Province.

SAXI research lead Professor Mark Jessell from the University of Western Australia recently presented the highlights of the first year of SAXI’s operations. A recording of the information session is available by contacting labol1680232103g.ari1680232103ma@de1680232103er.al1680232103egna1680232103.

Decarbonisation and the demand for copper to fuel the Green Revolution will necessitate research and innovation, especially in the copper-rich South America.

An article in Stockhead outlines the potential of the region, not just for Australia (as mentioned in the article), but for all our Members.

Take the opportunity!

The Amira Global Alliance will continue to expand in South America is coming weeks.

I encourage you to connect with Patricio Pastorelli to discuss how you can benefit from the work being undertaken in the region. His email is labol1680232103g.ari1680232103ma@il1680232103lerot1680232103sap.o1680232103cirta1680232103p1680232103.

There is a vast amount of opportunity available now and we are committed to providing pathways that will be help you, our Members, continue to grow.”

New MOU with Peruvian mining hub

17 March, 2022 by zeme capa

In today’s post we talk to Amira Global CEO Dr Jacqui Coombes about a new agreement with the Mining Innovation HUB of Peru.

“We are currently building a global network of allied organisations, such as the Mining Innovation Hub of Peru, to help deliver new data, information, technology and innovation to our Members

The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Mining Innovation HUB of Peru marks the beginning of greater collaboration with mining organisations in South America.

Mining Innovation Hub of Peru is a forward-thinking mining organisation and we look forward to their valuable contribution to the Global Alliance.

In announcing the MOU with us, CEO Pamela Antonioli said the alliance with Amira gives us the opportunity to share and strengthen efforts in search of the mining of the future.

“The role of research in mining is key to generating knowledge and addressing the great challenges of the sector” – Pamela Antonioli, Mining Innovation HUB from Peru.

Benefits to Members

Mining Innovation HUB from Peru was created by mining companies operating in Peru to facilitate innovation and collaboration.

Its objectives are:

  • to promote a culture of innovation and collaboration
  • to define the ecosystem to help reduce the effort of connecting
  • to accelerate the development of initiatives that solve challenges
  • to position the mining sector as an innovative sector.

Members include miners Buenaventura, Goldfields, Minera Poderosa, Nexa, Hubday, and Consorcio Minero Horizonte, and mining suppliers such as Engie and Schneider Electric.

The MOU opens a pathway for Amira Global Members to engage with the Peruvian mining ecosystem.

Through Amira, Members will be able to access and network with key stakeholders in Peru’s mining sector, and explore opportunities for research and development projects.

It is a pathway to active national and international innovation networks and an avenue for learning about trends and innovative advances in the region.

How to get involved?

The MOU is managed by Amira’s Head of Global Alliances, Patricio Pastorelli, who is based in Santiago, Chile.

Patricio will be able to help Amira Global Members connect with the appropriate contact within the Mining Innovation HUB of Peru as well as help with language barriers.

The HUB runs the following activities:

  • Working groups (MesaHub)
  • Meet ups (MeetHub)
  • Workshops
  • Events
  • Open innovation processes
  • Culture programs

I encourage you all to learn more about the MOU and how you can benefit from our expanding Global Alliance by reaching out to Patricio Pastorelli at labol1680232103g.ari1680232103ma@il1680232103lerot1680232103sap.o1680232103icirt1680232103ap1680232103.”

Meet your perfect match in Peru’s mining sector

17 March, 2022 by zeme capa

As part of the new agreement between Amira Global and the Mining Innovation Hub of Peru, Members are eligible to participate in the open innovation program, PERUMIN Hub.

PERUMIN Hub is the main open innovation program of the mining sector in Peru.

The Hub, which was launched in early March 2022, has three stages: challenges; match-making, and a contest. The first stage is complete.

Amira Global Head of Global Alliances Patricio Pastorelli said Members were welcome to participate in the matchmaking stage.

Matchmaking is conducted through two free platforms. The Hub searches to:

  • connect innovators from different ecosystems, national and international to complement and strengthen their proposals
  • enable innovators to present a preliminary profile of their proposals to the internal teams of mining companies to receive feedback from a potential user.

“This is an outstanding opportunity to engage with a large group of innovators from the Peruvian and LATAM ecosystem, including reserchers, mining companies, investors, and government officials,” Mr Pastorelli said.

“The topics of conversation of the matchmaking of PERUMIN HUB were selected by Peru’s mining companies, and represent the biggest challenges of the industry.”

The topics are:

  • Environmental sustainability
  • Water resources
  • Mining 4.0

Matchmaking began on 10 March and involves completing a short form to participate.

You are also able to receive compatibility suggestions with different national and international matchmakers.

PERUMIN Hub is an alliance between the Peruvian Institute of Mining Engineers and the Mining Innovation Hub of Peru, and consists of 18 mining companies and more than 40 national and international allies.

To learn more about this opportunity, the Mining Innovation Hub of Peru, or Amira’s Global Alliances, please contact Patricio Pastorelli at labol1680232103g.ari1680232103ma@il1680232103lerot1680232103sap.o1680232103icirt1680232103ap1680232103.
